I started by looking at the differences of the two most bought genres of magazine, music and fashion.
I chose the fashion magazine ‘VOUGUE’ and for the music magazine I decided to go for a selection of ‘NME’, ‘MOJO’ and ‘Q’.
To start they do have some similarities, they both tend to show women on the front of them and they have their masthead at the top of the page (but thats common in all publishings). The differences with them however is that the music magazines are more ‘out there’ than the fashion equivalent. For example the one of Beth Dito who is featured in complete nudity on the front cover of NME. A further contrast is the VOGUE covers contain a lot less writing than all of the music covers, they also don’t seem to have their writing going over the subject. Both MOJO and Q do this to great extent and it only leaves the face of Madonna clear in the Q issue.
Harry. You MUST explain why these things are on the cover, not simply that they are.
ReplyDeleteWhy feature a nude Beth Ditto? Think about how this represents her as an artist, what does it do to the theory of the 'Male Gaze'
