The front cover of the magazine i’m going to look at is the NME with Pete Doherty on the front.
The first thing that potential customers are going to see when the magazine is on the shelves is the section above. This is even above the title of the magazine, it entices the customer to choose this magazine because it suggest that buying this magazine will mean that you have the inside knowledge for the new year. They have chosen to use a simple font and red coloring. The red makes peoples heart beat faster and increase their breathing. This in turn will make the customer think that the words are having this effect on them and not the colour.
The title of the magazine NME is in the same color and similar font as ‘New Albums 2008’ it also has the same effect as this does, the title is the biggest text on the page and this is what the creators of the magazine want you to see first. Even though it is not at the very top of the page it is very nearly, so close that it still would be seeable from the magazine stands, so it is easy to pick out between rival magazines.

The main and only photo on the front is of Pete Doherty on his own, he doesn’t look extremely happy which could link in with the caption ‘Petes solo album’ its the work solo that could have a connection ] with the expression on his face. It may also represent the lifestyle he has lead and that he simply always looks like that and he his sincere and doesn’t have time to smile for cameras.

The caption to go with it is in the same font as the first writing on the page, his name is also in red, this is not only for the other reasons it is also so that on a cover that is very hectic it still jumps out. It gives a quote from what I can only presume will be an article inside, this effects the reader by making them think, what and how is it different? The word ‘exclusive’ is in a different font and at a slant, it is done so that is seems it has been added on at a later date and with the rest of the text being horizontal the slant makes the readers gaze go to it.

Another sentence that looks as though it has been an after thought is ‘plus over 20 studio reports from...’ the colors used here are black and red, the black background has connotations with dark and mystery. The use of ellipses leaves the reader dead in their tracks and propels them to want to buy it and read on.

These snippets of band names are enough to make the potential customer want to buy it because it suggest that the issue is pact full of big names and the latest news about them. The white is a good contrast to the red and makes is stand out on the page.

The two circles attract attention because they are different shapes to everything else on the page, they provide snippets of information that is quite important which is why they are in the circles because it makes it stand out.

Looking at the magazine together we can see that each section of the magazine stands out on it own but in different ways, they have stuck to mainly 3 colors, white red and black. They have introduced yellow on the background of the photo but instead of making the cover too confusing it enhances the photo and makes it stand out even more. Keeping  writing of the photo as best they could of shows that the main idea of the magazine is Pete. They have even added some information with the barcode when looking at the magazine it doesn’t really stand out but as we know the bottom right of the page is what we look at last before we turn the page. It is an ideal spot to add a last piece of information.

I particularly liked your comparison between fashion and music covers, a good place to start to begin to define the 'feel' of music magazines.
